*According to the ODS website, court documents issued after July 10, 2023, generally do not require notarization, as the Ministry of Government Services and the Ministry of the Attorney General have a shared database for real-time verification of document authenticity. However, some court documents are still not included in that database, requiring ODS officers to request confirmation from the Ministry of the Attorney General, which typically takes 10 days. To avoid delays, our policy is to notarize all court-issued documents, to make sure that ODS can issue the apostille immediately. **RCMP Police Certificates are federally issued documents that can only be apostilled by Global Affairs Canada. Unlike documents issued by the Ontario provincial government, which can be apostilled in person at the Ontario Official Documents Services (ODS) office, RCMP Police Certificates must be sent by mail to Global Affairs Canada for processing. As a result, processing times are significantly longer and typically take several weeks. For this reason, the delivery time guarantees we offer for other apostille services do not apply to RCMP Police Certificates.
What is an Apostille?
An Apostille is a certification issued by a provincial or federal government that authenticates the signature and seal of the person who signed the document. It is usually a sheet of paper attached to the apostilled document by the authenticating authority.
Once it has been apostilled, the document can be submitted to a foreign Embassy/Consulate in Canada or sent abroad for various purposes, and it will be accepted as valid and legal by the foreign authorities. Canada joined the Apostille Treaty (which includes most of the world’s nations) on January 11, 2024. Since that date, every Canadian official document intended for use abroad must be apostilled.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are documents that CANNOT be apostilled?
Examples of Canadian documents that cannot be apostilled:
- Documents commissioned by a Commissioner for Taking Affidavits;
- Documents issued outside of Canada;
- Religious documents (baptismal certificates, etc.);
- Legalized documents (previously authenticated document already legalized by a consulate or embassy); and
- Pseudo-legal documents (legal-sounding documents stating false rules that claim to be law).
- Death Certificates issued by Funeral Homes.

Is the apostille valid all around the world?
Almost, but there are a few exceptions. The Apostille International Treaty includes 127 countries (as of October 2024). Some countries have not signed the Hague Convention (which created the Apostille system). In those few countries, the Apostille is not accepted.
Please check in the list below if your country is included among the members of the Apostille treaty. If it is included in the list, you can proceed with the apostille.

Does the apostille office require an english/french translation of your document before issuing an apostille?
If the document that needs to be apostilled is issued in Canada but written in a language other than English or French, (i.e. if you have a Power of Attorney that the lawyer writes directly in the language where it is going to be used) the ODS requires to see an official translation in English or French submitted together with the document that needs the apostille. Official translations are those provided by ATIO Certified Translators or by Notaries who are fluent in the language of the document and in English/French.

How do you proceed?
Fill out the GET A QUOTE form, take scans/pictures of your document and attach them to the form, then send the quote request to us. Your request will be handled confidentially, none of your data will ever be shared with any third party. The quote is completely free and comes with no obligation.
We will respond promptly with a detailed price estimate, based on the information you provide us and the type/content of your documents.
If you accept the quote, bring your documents to our office (we are conveniently located, close to Yorkdale Mall, with a large free parking behind the building) or mail them to us by XpressPost (not regular mail!) or by courier and pay the amount of the quote by e-transfer to sales@apostilleexpress.ca
The delivery guarantee begins when we receive both documents and payment (whichever comes last).
Once documents are apostilled (and translated, if required), we will contact you to arrange pickup or initiate delivery as requested. The project is considered ‘delivered’ when we create the XpressPost or courier label with a tracking number, or when we notify you that the documents are ready for pickup if you prefer to collect them in person.
